The 2017 USSD Conference Theme is It’s a Small World: Managing Our Water Resources. The theme plays into the Conference venue in Anaheim, just blocks away from Disneyland, but more importantly, the theme points to how the world is connected to a finite amount of water resources, especially fresh water. With so many interconnected competing interests for our limited water resources, collaboration from a diverse population is a necessity — just as the “It’s a Small World” attraction at Disneyland showcases cultural diversity and international unity.

    Our Host

The Host for the Annual Meeting and Conference is the California Department of Water Resources, Division of Safety of Dams. Thank you, California!

    Our Conference Chair

The 2017 Annual Meeting and Conference is chaired by Dina Hunt of Gannett Fleming. Thanks to Dina and the Conference Planning Committee for their work in putting together an outstanding program!

7.30am to 5.00pm      Registration Desk Open at the Marriott

8.00am to 12.00noon    Four Workshops at the Marriott

    • 1. CDA's Public Safety Program Development for Dams, Thursday, and Friday, by pre-registration only and limited to 40 registrants  - Pinnacle Sponsor, Sponsored by Worthington Products. Thursday and Friday morning. USSD and the Canadian Dam Association are collaborating to deliver a practical hands-on workshop providing case studies and tools that can immediately be applied for the assessment of public safety risks at a facility. Instruction is based on CDA Guidelines for Public Safety Around Dams, 2011. The workshop will benefit managers and operators of dam facilities involved in risk management assessments or decisions related to public safety. MORE DETAILS HERE
    • 2. Seismic Analysis of Concrete Dams, Thursday, and Friday. Seismic analyses are becoming more detailed, more dependent on advanced modeling techniques, and more frequently inform critical dam safety decisions.  However, the relative scarcity of data on the performance of dams subjected to extreme seismic events complicates the verification of these analytic tools and methods. It is prudent to solicit opinions among researchers and practitioners about the current state of practice in seismic analysis of dams to assess whether the results are consistent with observed performance and whether the right potential failure modes are being addressed. Participants will be encouraged to submit short statements identifying issues of particular concern followed by an open discussion among workshop attendees. FULL PROGRAM HERE
    • 3. Dry Dams and Levees – Thursday.  This workshop will first define what is meant by a “dry” dam or levee. We will review potential cracking mechanisms in these unsaturated embankments, some of which are unique to flood-control dams and levees in semi-arid environments. Relevant internal erosion potential failure modes will be described with graphics and example event trees, and the presenters will offer suggestions on how to handle intermittent, transient hydraulic loading in the risk evaluation process. Soil physical characteristics and specialized laboratory testing methods for scour and erosion potential will be reviewed in the context of internal erosion failure modes. The workshop presenters will introduce available numerical and physical modelling tools for estimating the response of unsaturated embankments that are subjected to rapid filling and draw down. FULL PROGRAM HERE
    • 4. Answering the Most Important Question of 2017 - What Is An Environmentally Sustainable Water Project - How Do We Communicate? Thursday. Every issue that USSD members face today, from the media to policy-makers to the general public, is tied to the question of the environmental sustainability of the projects we create or operate. The very future of our work depends on how we approach the answer. To an engineer, this is a complex question without a short, easily defined answer. To those who operate in the media, public affairs or political realm, the answer is a simple Yes or No — it either is or isn’t. How do we bridge the gap between engineering reality and communications necessity? FULL PROGRAM HERE

11.30 to 1.00pm        Buffet Lunch at the Marriott - Grand Ballroom H

1.00pm to 5.00pm               Four Workshops at the Marriott (continued)

1.00pm to 5.00pm              Field Tour, Orange County Groundwater Recharge Program - The Thursday afternoon field tour will by organized by the Orange County Water District, and will feature its Groundwater Replenishment System. OCWD is responsible for managing the vast groundwater basin that provides most of northern and central Orange County’s drinking water. OCWD maintains one of the world’s most advanced aquifer recharge systems to replace the water that is pumped from wells belonging to local water agencies, cities, and other groundwater users. Participants will visit recharge basins near Anaheim, the Advanced Water Purification Facility at OCWD Headquarters in Fountain Valley and a seawater intrusion barrier. One motorcoach will return to the Marriott via John Wayne Airport for flights scheduled after 7 pm.

8.00am to 5.00pm             Field Tour, Perris Dam and Diamond Valley Dam - Motor Coaches at the front of the Marriott

A full day tour on Friday will visit Perris Dam [above], which is undergoing a seismic retrofit. It is expected that participants will see the placement and compaction of buttress fill along with removal and/or reconstruction of a section of the dam at the right abutment. Following lunch, the tour will visit Diamond Valley Lake [below]. Key features to be observed during the tour will be the 285-foot-high West Dam, the 2.1-milelong East Dam, and the 270-foot- high reinforced concrete inlet/outlet tower.

One motor coach will return to the Marriott via John Wayne Airport for flights scheduled after 7 pm.
